How to Run Party Games for Large Groups (With Game Ideas That Actually Work)

  • Mar 26
  • 4 min read

Running party games for a large group isn’t the same as a normal game night.

It’s closer to running an event.

You’re not just picking games, you’re managing:

  • People

  • Energy

  • Organisation

  • Chaos

Get it right, and the room is electric. Get it wrong, and it falls apart fast.

After running tournaments with 20+ players across multiple tables, I’ve learned this:

The game matters, but how you run it matters more.

The Real Problem With party Games for Large Groups

Most people think the challenge is: “What games should I play?”

If you’re still figuring that out, it’s worth understanding how to choose the perfect party game before you even start planning.

But the truth is that’s not the real challenge.

The real challenge is: Keeping control of the group

With large groups:

  • People don’t know where to go

  • Rules get misunderstood

  • Teams get mixed up

  • Energy drops quickly

That’s where most game nights fall apart.

What Actually Works (From Real Events)

After running live tournaments, there are a few things that consistently make or break the experience.

Keep Everything Fast

With large groups, speed is everything.

If there are:

  • Long explanations

  • Delays between rounds

  • People waiting too long

…the energy disappears.

Games should be:

  • Quick to explain

  • Quick to set up

  • Quick to play

Use Teams (And Make Them Obvious)

Large groups need structure.

Teams solve that but only if they’re clear.

One of the simplest things we’ve used is: Coloured wristbands, (or if it is themed we will use silly hats as it adds to the fun)

It sounds basic, but it stops confusion instantly.

People always know:

  • Who they’re with

  • Who they’re competing against

Keep Everyone In (No Elimination)

Elimination doesn’t work with large groups.

Once people are out:

  • They disengage

  • They stop caring

Instead, run points-based rounds. Everyone stays involved. Every round matters.

Pre-Pack Everything

This is one of the biggest lessons from our tournaments.

We used to set games up on the spot.

It caused:

  • Delays

  • Confusion

  • Uneven equipment

Now we pre-pack everything per team.

It makes the whole event:

  • Smoother

  • Faster

  • More enjoyable

Use Referees

With large groups, disagreements will happen.

Have 1–2 people acting as refs to:

  • Enforce rules

  • Keep things fair

  • Avoid arguments

Game Ideas That Work for Large Groups

Once you’ve got the structure right, the games become much easier.

The best games for large groups are:

  • Simple

  • Physical

  • Team-based

All of the games below are taken from the Smashed It party game box, which we use in live tournaments to keep large groups engaged and moving.

Here are a few we’ve used that always work.

Rear Run

Each team has a ping pong ball and two cups placed a distance apart.

Players must move it using only their bum, around the cups and back before the next teammate goes.

First team to finish wins.

Why it works:

  • instantly funny

  • easy to understand

  • keeps everyone involved

Chuck

One player is the catcher, holding a lightweight plastic cup.

The rest of the team throws lightweight plastic cups one at a time from a distance, trying to land them in.

First team to land all their cups wins.

Why it works:

  • builds tension

  • encourages teamwork

  • simple but competitive

Trembling Towers

One player holds their hand out flat.

Teammates run one at a time and stack lightweight plastic cups, alternating direction. More cups = Increased difficulty.

First team to stack all cups and hold for 3 seconds wins.

Why it works:

  • Creates pressure

  • Requires coordination

  • Great for spectators

The Secret to High Energy Games

Here’s something I’ve learned very quickly: Movement creates energy.

The second people are:

  • Moving

  • Competing

  • Reacting

…the atmosphere changes completely.

If you want to take this further, here’s how to keep party games fresh and exciting throughout the night.

One of the best moments I’ve seen was during a relay challenge.

Within minutes:

  • Strangers were cheering for each other

  • People were laughing constantly

  • Teams were fully invested

That’s what you’re aiming for.

Don’t Forget About Space

This catches people out all the time.

You might have great games planned but not enough room.

For large groups, you need:

  • Clear play areas

  • Space for movement

  • Defined zones

If space is limited:

  • Reduce team sizes

  • Use table games

  • Stagger rounds

The Golden Rule

If there’s one thing to remember, it’s this: Preparation prevents poor performance.

If you’re organised:

  • Everything runs smoothly

  • People stay engaged

  • Energy stays high

If you wing it?

It can fall apart very quickly.

Final Thoughts

Running party games for large groups isn’t about finding the “perfect game.”

It’s about:

  • Structure

  • Flow

  • Energy

Get those right, and the games take care of themselves.

And when you do, something powerful happens - a group of individuals turns into a room full of competitive, laughing teammates.
